Funeral Service Careers and Current Openings

What does a funeral director do?

The funeral director listens, advises and supports, offering comfort and guidance during a difficult time by handling all of the details associated with a death. A licensed professional, the funeral director works closely with surviving family members to prepare and facilitate the final rites and disposition of the deceased. This typically includes the transfer of the deceased from the place of death to a funeral home, making arrangements with the surviving family, embalming and preparing the deceased, making arrangements with a cemetery or crematory, coordinating and directing the services while accompanying and supporting the family.

Funeral directors also understand that each individual and family grieves differently. They answer questions about grief, recognize when a person is having difficulty coping, and recommend sources for professional help. Funeral directors also link survivors with support groups at the funeral home or in the community.
