CHARLES ARTHUR "CHIP" BRETHEN, III
August 30, 1946 - November 28, 2013
Charles Arthur Brethen, III was born on August 30, 1946 in Detroit, Michigan. His parents were Charles and Barbara (nee Appelhof) Brethen and they were of Scottish, Welsh, German, Dutch and English descent. He died on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2013, peacefully at his home in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He was 67 years of age.
Soon after he was born, he would be given the nickname of "Chip"
Chip was a resident of Bloomfield Hills and a former resident of Grosse Ile. He graduated in 1964 from Cranbrook School and in 1968 from the University of North Carolina with his B.S. degree in Business Administration. He was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force and served as Captain in the Michigan Air National Guard. He was a longtime executive in the automotive paint and coating industry. He was past President of Detroit Paint and Coatings Association, past President and CEO of Wyandotte Paint Products Company, past President of Akzo Coatings, North America Division and past President of Telescope/Elliot Travel. He was a member of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO), the Detroit Presidents Organization (DPO) and the Cranbrook Board of Governors. Chip enjoyed travel, cooking, golf, hunting and fishing.
Chip was the beloved husband of Gail K. Brethen (nee Powers). Dear father of David A. Brethen, Geoffrey C. Brethen (Kiara) and the late Charles A. Brethen, IV. Son of Barbara A. and the late Charles A. Brethen, Jr. Brother of Susan Lapelle (Hunter) and Nancy Strickland (Tom). Uncle of John Lapelle, Susan Muskovitz (Andy), Nicky Arnold (Jack), Steven Strickland (Julie) and Scott Strickland (Anne).
A celebration of life service will be held in the spring of 2014. Family memorial services were held privately at Christ Church Cranbrook. In lieu of flowers, family suggests memorial tributes to the Cranbrook Educational Community, PO Box 801, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48303-0801, in memory of Charles A. Brethen, III.
