Beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather
James Craig Holmes was born on April 8, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan to Hiram and Jean (nee Craig) Holmes. He died on Monday, January 14, 2013 at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. He was 83 years of age.
James would later become affectionately known as "Sherlock"
James was a lifelong resident of the Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills area. He was a graduate of Cranbrook School (cum laude), the University of Arizona (valedictorian) and the University of Michigan (valedictorian), receiving his MBA.
He was a veteran of the United States Air Force serving in Germany during the Korean War. He had an accomplished career as a real estate investor and appraiser. He was a member of the Appraisal Institute and Real Estate Answer Forum. James was the former Chairman of the Board of Crittenton Hospital. He was an adjunct professor of real estate at University of Michigan Business School. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and head usher at Christ Church Cranbrook. He was a member of the Birmingham Athletic Club and the Chicago Club in Charlevoix, MI. He enjoyed tennis, growing orchids, watching CNBC… and attending his grandchildren's sporting events.
James was the beloved husband of Helen W. Holmes (nee Winkler) and they were married for 59½ years. Dear father of James C. Holmes Jr. (Kathy), Stephen W. Holmes (Mary), and William P. Holmes (Dottie). Loving "Kiki" of Kristin, Jay, Hadley, Stephen, Austin, Perry, Andy and Paul. Brother of Nancy Gilbert. Also survived by his cat "Chief".
The memorial service will be Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 2:00pm at Christ Church, Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills (Lone Pine and Cranbrook Roads).
