John Stanford Hayden died May 21, 2012. He was 80 years old. John was born October 30, 1931 to Charles and Nova Hayden in Detroit, MI.
John was raised in Highland Park and Royal Oak, MI. His family moved from Highland Park to Royal Oak in the 1940s. John graduated from Royal Oak High School, and went on to Adrian College. During his time at Adrian, though, John entered the Army. He served his country for three years during the early 1950s, and was stationed in London, England. After his three years were completed, John continued his education at Michigan State University. He graduated from MSU with a Bachelor of Science in Logistics. This degree served John well in his professional career as he worked as a logistics analyst with the General Motors Company for over 29 years. He focused on the logistics of GM's supply chain. John took an early retirement from GM so he could enjoy his time with his wife and family as much as possible.
John married Nancy Wickham on August 24, 1957 at the Royal Oak Methodist Church. After their marriage, John and Nancy lived in Terra Haute, IN and Dayton, OH before settling in Livonia, MI. The couple has lived in Livonia now for 49 years.
John will always be remembered for his sense of humor. He always had a smile on his face, and was ready to crack a joke. John was a voracious reader. It was not uncommon for him to read a book in one day. His favorite books were mysteries and suspense novels. He also loved to read about military history and biographies about important military figures. Travelling was another of John's passions. He and Nancy were members of the Nomads travel club. This enabled them to take trips all over the world that they otherwise would not have. John travelled to every continent except Antarctica. His favorite destinations included Iceland, the Galapagos Islands, Africa, Russia, China, and Japan. John loved discovering new places and different experiences.
Beloved husband of Nancy for 54 years. Loving father of Gail Cavanaugh (Jim) and Brian (Larisa). Caring grandpa of Kelsey and Austin Cavanaugh. Always will be remembered by many cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends Saturday 3-8 p.m. at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 2600 Crooks Road (between Maple & Big Beaver).
A Memorial Service will be held at Universalist Unitarian Church of Farmington at a later date.
