Kathryn Louise Flynn Hulgrave, always a classy lady, always devoted to her family, always a devout Catholic, passed away on October 25, 2012.
Kathryn Louise was born on September 20, 1916 in Cleveland, Ohio, the third daughter of Kathryn and James Flynn. Her three sisters were Agnes Rieden, Margaret Zimmer, and Mary Ryan.
Early in her life, her family moved to Detroit, traveling via train. She vividly remembered getting all dressed up for the move, and she really enjoyed the sound of the train whistle. Even in her 96th year, she found particular joy in the sound of the train whistle as it traveled past her final residence in Waterford. Earlier in her life, Kathryn resided in Detroit until 1964 when the entire family moved to Bloomfield Village. The Village is where she maintained the Hulgrave home until 2007.
Kathryn attended St. Theresa Elementary and High School where she met one of her lifelong friends, Gladys Zimmer. She continued her studies at Marygrove College, majoring in psychology, a degree which led to employment in social work. While at Marygrove, Kathryn met another lifelong friend, Jane O'Connor Payne.
During her college years, Kathryn engaged in an active social life with Daniel Hulgrave, Jr., including dances at the Delta Tau Delta fraternity house on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor. On May 13, 1939, Kathryn and Daniel were united in the sacrament of marriage, securing a life of dancing together for years beyond college.
In the years that followed, this blessed union produced 8 children, 3 sons and 5 daughters: Daniel J., Mary K. Gladding (the late Richard), Jeanne Hulgrave, David (Mary), Joanne Keimig (Bill), Bert (Marjorie), Martha Doty (Jeff), and Ann Anderson (Gary).
In the decades that followed, Kathryn also had 18 grandchildren: Rick, Brett, Leigh, Michael, Kristin, David, Christopher, Emily, Andrew, Thomas, Kathryn (Katie), Nancy, Susan, Ellen, Stephen, Mark, Brady, and Abby. In recent years, Kathryn's circle of love grew to include 10 great-grandchildren: Alexandra, Sarah, Jack, Nick, Ryan, Grant, Clare, Jacob James, Brady, and Miley.
Throughout her lifetime, faith, family, and friends were her passion. She had unwavering devotion to the Catholic Church and Mary, the Blessed Mother. As the decades flew by, she maintained strong relationships with her mother and three sisters. The four sisters played bridge on a weekly basis, bragging to each other about the accomplishments of their children and grandchildren. Birthdays, christenings, weddings, graduations, and holiday gatherings kept her social calendar full. She was a cherished presence at every event, brightening it with her glowing personality. She loved to see her family together and loved to see them all dressed up…she had great fashion sense herself. Her life truly was one of commitment, companionship, and compassion.
For her 96 years, Kathryn Louise was a beautiful, classy lady who responded to life's challenges with grace and style.
