LOUIS THOMAS GERBACK
December 10, 1921 – July 8 , 2012
Louis Thomas Gerback was born on December 10, 1921 in Torrington, Connecticut. Lou died on July 8, 2012 at Woodward Hills Nursing Center in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He was 90 years of age.
Lou was a resident of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan for 44 years. He was a former resident of Royal Oak and Berkley, both in Michigan. After his retirement in 1985, Lou and Alice lived in South Carolina. He graduated in 1940 from Cooley High School in Detroit. He graduated from the University of Detroit, School of Engineering in 1944.
After his graduation, Lou began his longtime career in the Aeronautical, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering industry. He retired in 1985 as Project Manager for the US Army's Tank Automotive Command (TACOM) and was involved with the development of the M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank. He retired after 45 years of service. Prior to TACOM, he was employed by the Sperry Gyroscope Company in New York and the Detroit Arsenal.
Lou enjoyed golf, tennis, bowling, camping, fishing, woodwork, handywork and remodeling. According to his family, he had a "great sense of humor and was fun to be around"
Beloved husband of Alice J. (nee Shelata) for 60 years. Dear father of James L. (Eileen), Jeanne M., Karen A. Brown (William), Timothy R. (Patricia), Christopher J. and Dennis A. Grandfather of Kevin, Lisa, Alex, Andrew, Angela, Emily and Sarah. Great grandfather of Luke and Nolan. Brother of Bernice Born.
Funeral service Thursday, 10a.m. at A.J. Desmond & Sons (Vasu, Rodgers & Connell Chapel), 32515 Woodward (btwn 13-14 Mile). Family will receive friends Wednesday 4-8p.m. Rosary 7:30p.m. Memorial tributes to The Arc of Oakland County, 1641 W. Big Beaver Rd., Troy, MI 48084.
