Dr. William John Westcott, DVM, age 93, of Bingham Farms passed away December 10, 2012. He is survived by his loving wife, Jean Furnival Westcott. Bill was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1919 and graduated from Michigan State University, School of Veterinary Medicine in 1943.
He began his veterinary career with a practice on Grand River in Detroit in 1944 and was the first veterinarian to establish a 24 hour care service in the country and was instrumental in bringing veterinary specialists to private practice. He was an American Kennel Club judge throughout the United States including the Westminster Dog Show.
He was a member of the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association and the Southeastern Veterinary Medical Association since 1944. He was president of the American Animal Hospital Association and president of the Michigan State Alumni Association. He served his community as president of the local Kiwanis and his church, Kirk in the Hills, as a trustee. He enjoyed developing real estate in Marco Island, Florida and was an accomplished pilot.
He will be greatly missed and is survived by his sons, David (Deborah) of North Carolina, Larry (Vicki) of Farmington Hills and daughter, Betsy Coats (Peter) of Birmingham. He had 7 loving grandchildren, Gregory Westcott, Jennifer Westcott, Lindsay Nast, Allison Cole, Megan Eldridge, Stephanie Westcott and Michelle Westcott and 6 great grandchildren.
A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at the Kirk in the Hills on Saturday, December 15th at 11:00am.
The family has requested that memorials be made to Kirk in the Hills Endowment Fund or MSU College of Veterinary Medicine's Dean's Fund in memory of Dr. William John Westcott.
